HMPV Virus Infections: 5 cases detected in India; Bengaluru, Chennai among impacted cities, authorities issue advisories

HMPV Cases in India: An 8-month-old male infant, who tested positive for HMPV on January 3, 2025, after being admitted to Baptist Hospital, Bengaluru, with a history of bronchopneumonia.

In India, five instances of human metapneumovirus (HMPV) have been reported. After being taken to Baptist Hospital in Bengaluru, a three-month-old girl and an eight-month-old boy were found to have HMPV. In Ahmedabad, a two-month-old infant was discovered to be HMPV positive in another HMPV case. Two youngsters have tested positive for HMPV in Chennai as well.

The HMPV virus that was found in India is distinct. We must wait for confirmation before making any comments, though, as it is unclear whether the virus strain discovered here and the one reported in China are connected, according to a health source.
